To Everyone:
It is easy to get wrapped up in the mentality that it is all about winning, beating the other team, getting the trophy or simply saying that we must be the best. However; it is that mentality that keeps us from realizing what it really is all about... development, sportsmanship, life lessons and fun.
When those four things are taught, that is when we and our children, really understand what winning is about. These are the aspects that we want to teach here in the Huron County Hockey Association. Winning is a by product of these characteristics of the game and competition is what reinforces these characteristics. If our children aren't being taught this, then what does a winning record really mean?
I ask you to take a few minutes out of your day to review the short video I attached regarding youth sportsmanship. We as parents, coaches and volunteers always need to remember the lesson that is being taught in this video. It is inevitable that we will fall short of this at one time or another... I know I have. But, we all have to remember, as it says in the video, "...In a child, sports builds character. In an adult, sports reveals character..."
As we come into the final months of the season, we as coaches, parents and volunteers, need to remind ourselves of these basic tenets of the game and if we have instilled them in our children.
Please let me know if you have any thoughts you would like to share with me on this subject.
